This 3 minute calming breathwork can be done anytime but it's amazing to do before bed to send you off to sleep in a peaceful state. It will help you to tune into the left side of your body which the yogic teachings say regulates your emotions and is connected to the lunar energy (feminine energy). Breathing through the left nostril helps you to relax your nervous system into a parasympathetic state.

Neuroscience and yogic science converge here as it's known that the left hemisphere of the brain controls the logic mind (masculine energy) and the right hemisphere controls the creativity mind (feminine energy). The nerves of these two brain hemispheres cross at the medulla oblongata, the lowest part of the brain right behind your eyes that controls basic visceral activities, and travels to the opposite sides of the spinal cord from where they originated. So the left side of the body corresponds to the right brain and right side of body, left brain.


When we breathe only through the left nostril, we are therefore stimulating the nerve of the right feminine side of the brain and it has an extremely calming effect.
