What is Kundalini yoga? And how does it work?

Life is filled with vibrant energy—everything and everyone we interact with is energy. Kundalini Yoga, is said to be the “Yoga of Awakening” or the “Yoga of Awareness” and can awaken you to the power of your internal energy and lead to an expansive spiritual awakening within that can touch every aspect of your life. 

It is a dynamic form of yoga that combines breathwork, movement, mantra, meditation, and deep relaxation to awaken and strengthen the Kundalini energy within the body. This energy is often depicted as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine and is believed to be the primal life force energy. Through Kundalini yoga practices, we can raise this energy through a series of movements and exercises, allowing it to flow freely through the energy centers, or chakras, along the spine. It can also support physical health, mental clarity and emotional balance.

Through specific postures, movements, and breathwork techniques, you can release tension, increase flexibility, and balance the nervous system. How often should I practice Kundalini yoga?

It all comes down to YOUR goals and level of commitment to your growth, health and expansion. We practice every morning as our morning ritual and it’s encouraged to be practiced regularly, ideally several times a week, but even practicing once a week can still offer benefits such as stress relief, increased energy, and improved overall well-being.

For beginners, start with a few practices per week and gradually increase the frequency as you become more comfortable. Consistency is key, so finding a routine that works for you and sticking to it is important for experiencing the full transformative effects of Kundalini yoga. The most important thing is to cultivate a sustainable practice that nourishes your mind, body, and spirit.

Where can I practice Kundalini yoga? How can I take classes with Intune?

You can practice Kundalini yoga from the comfort of your own home or anywhere with an internet connection, or you can also find a local meditation or yoga studio that offers Kundalini yoga classes. 

Intune offers online Kundalini yoga classes through our wellness studio for meditation, breathwork, and kriya yoga practices on demand and customized for you. You can access these classes by signing up for a membership on the Intune website. Once you become a member, you'll have access to a library of hundreds of Kundalini yoga classes, meditations and workshops. Is Kundalini yoga hard or dangerous?

Kundalini yoga can be intense because of its focus on breathwork, dynamic movements, and the activation of energy within the body. While some may find it physically and mentally challenging, it's generally safe for most people when practiced mindfully and with proper guidance. Like anything, it's essential to listen to your body, honor your limits, and work at your own pace. 

If you have any pre-existing health conditions or concerns, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before starting Kundalini yoga. With proper instruction and awareness, Kundalini yoga can be a transformative and empowering practice that can ground you in your body, unlock emotional freedom and cultivate presence and empowerment. Britt has been teaching for over a decade and Tara for 7 years and we are very well trained and teach it in a safe, fun way so that you can experience the maximum benefits!

Can I practice Kundalini yoga if I’m pregnant?

Pregnancy is one of the times that is most important to keep our vibration high. Our mindset and practices for pregnancy and birth can be an experience that can catapult us into new frequencies. It will open up and balance our chakras in a big way if we allow it to. When we tap into the ancient teachings and have a daily practice of meditation, yoga, chanting, prayer, and keeping ourselves in peaceful uplifting environments when pregnant, it makes all the difference. 

Pregnant women may fully participate but after their 120th day of pregnancy may not do breath of fire or any posture that puts any pressure on their belly including raising and lowering of the legs or pulling the root lock. We have a pregnancy guide inside Intune to give you specific guidance and modifications. We also have a full pregnancy course inside Intune for an additional fee called Conscious Bump to get specific practices for you to do each trimester. Please consult with your physician before practicing while pregnant. 

Women on their menstrual cycle may fully participate but are advised that during the first three days of their cycle to not do breath of fire and be gentle with any posture that might put pressure on their midsection including raising and lowering the legs and pulling the root lock.

If you have past or present injuries, medical conditions, or are pregnant, check with your doctor first before doing any yoga. No matter what your experience, listen to your body.

The number of calories burned during Kundalini yoga varies depending on several factors such as intensity, duration, individual body weight, and metabolism. Kundalini yoga can often be a more physically challenging form of yoga with repeated poses and movements, often held for longer periods. Instead of focusing solely on calorie expenditure, consider the holistic benefits of Kundalini yoga for health, vitality, bliss and balance.

What is the difference between regular yoga and Kundalini yoga?

Regular yoga, also known as Hatha yoga, emphasizes physical postures (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), and meditation to promote physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual growth.
